4 Ways to Manage Postpartum Hair Loss

6月 22, 2021

Many new mums are concerned about increased hair shedding after childbirth.

Is it normal to be losing so much hair after childbirth?

Although it may be scary to see the amount of hair loss when brushing or washing your hair, it is usually normal to experience increased hair shedding that peaks about 3 to 5 months after delivery.

There are 3 main phases in the hair growth cycle – growth phase, transitional phase, and resting phase – after which the hair is shed. During pregnancy, the majority of the hair is in the growth phase due to rising estrogen levels, and less hair is shed. Many ladies notice thick lustrous hair during pregnancy.

After giving birth, estrogen levels drop, signalling hair follicles to transition to the resting phase, therefore hair loss increases. We usually lose about 50-100 strands of hair per day, but this can go up to 300 in the postnatal period.

Other possible causes exacerbating postpartum hair loss include thyroid disorders, anaemia, nutritional deficiencies such as iron, vitamin B12, and vitamin D. The emotional and physical toll of giving birth and caring for a newborn may also worsen hair loss.

What can I do about postnatal hair loss?

Postnatal hair loss usually lasts about three months, and should improve after that – although new hair does take time to grow. Your hair should regain its normal fullness within 6 to 9 months after childbirth.

In the meantime, here are some tips for encouraging healthy hair growth:

1. Use gentle hair care products

Well-formulated shampoos and hair care products contain ingredients beneficial to the scalp and hair, without harsh chemicals that weigh down or damage the hair follicle or shaft. Healthsprings’ nourishing anti-hair loss shampoo and hair growth solution are specially formulated to encourage hair growth.

2. For women with longer hair, you can consider cutting a shorter hairstyle.

Frequently tying hair tight adds tension to the scalp, which may contribute to hair loss. Furthermore, long strands of hair on your hairbrush or in the shower drain may make the hair loss seem more drastic than it actually is.

3. Eat enough protein.

Protein is the main building block for hair. Sufficient intake of protein enables your body to produce keratin and collagen, and ensures that your hair is able to grow strong and thick. It is best to have a variety of protein sources such as red meat, chicken, fish, eggs, and beans.

4. Consider nutritional supplements.

Certain nutritional deficiencies, such as iron, vitamin B12, and vitamin D, may also lead to thinning, brittle hair. It may be beneficial to test for these, especially if postpartum hair loss is excessive or prolonged. Supplements may be helpful if levels of these vitamins and minerals are low.

If you notice patchy hair loss, bald spots, rashes on the scalp, or if your hair loss is excessive or persists beyond 6 to 9 months of giving birth, it is best to consult a doctor experienced in treating hair loss and scalp conditions.
