ADULTS: What Vaccinations Should I Get?

5月 11, 2021

Recommended vaccinations for adults

The COVID-19 vaccination has shone the spotlight on vaccinations and how they are beneficial in reducing complications from certain infectious diseases. Did you know that there are also other vaccinations recommended for adults?

Recommended vaccinations for adults

  1. Flu vaccine

Influenza – with symptoms of fever, body aches, and lethargy – can result in hospitalisation, complications, or even death in certain higher-risk populations. The flu vaccine is therefore recommended for these people:

  • Persons aged 65 years or older
  • Pregnant women
  • Those with asthma or other lung disease, diabetes, chronic diseases affecting the heart, kidneys, or nervous system.

Pneumococcal vaccine

  1. Pneumococcal vaccine

These vaccines protect against pneumoccal disease – an infection which can affect the lungs (pneumonia), brain and spinal cord (meningitis), ears and sinuses, and blood. They can be deadly or have long-term complications.

For persons aged 65 years or older, 2 vaccinations (Prevnar-13 and Pneumovax-23, spaced 1 year apart) are recommended.

The Pneumovax-23 vaccine is also recommended for those who are younger than 65 years old, but with diabetes or chronic diseases affecting the lungs, heart, kidneys, or liver.

Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis (Tdap)

  1. Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis (Tdap)

Most of us would have taken this vaccination in childhood. It is, however, recommended for women to take a booster dose during each pregnancy. This is to protect the newborn baby, as babies are at high risk for severe complications such as pneumonia, convulsions, brain damage, or death.

HPV

  1. HPV

For ladies who have not yet taken the HPV (human papillomavirus) vaccine for prevention of cervical cancer, you can discuss with our doctors if it is suitable for you.

You can read more about the HPV vaccine at these links: 1. Who Should Get the HPV Vaccination? Costs & Types of Vaccine in Singapore – Healthsprings (healthspringsgroup.com.sg)

Other vaccinations

  1. Other vaccinations

If you are unsure about your vaccination status for Hepatitis B, MMR (measles, mumps, rubella), or Varicella (chickenpox), you can do a blood test to check your immunity status. If you do not have any evidence of immunity to these viruses, it is recommended to get vaccinated.

You may be eligible for government subsidies for the above vaccinations. This was implemented from November 2020 for all Singaporeans. (Read more here: National Adult Immunisation Schedule (NAIS) (primarycarepages.sg))

Schedule a consultation with our doctors to check your eligibility for these vaccinations.
