How does it work?

This procedure targets the muscle that’s located on the side of the jaw on both sides – one of the muscles involved in chewing. Masseter muscle gives volume and fullness to the sides of the jaw. By injecting Botox to relax the masseter/ jaw muscles, the large muscle will decrease and shrink down in size over time. It will work to slim down the jaw area and make the face appear slimmer.

Any possible side effects? Will it affect my smile?

This is a safe treatment if it’s done by an experienced and certified doctor.

The possible side effect is soreness and bruising after the injection. Those are the primary side effects and will usually subside after a few hours to a few days.

It can be riskier if it’s done by someone who lacks experience. It can affect your smile and the symmetry of your face. Hence, it is important to seek out a certified and skilled doctor.

Am I a good candidate for Botox for jaw muscles?

This treatment is ideal for you if you have a wide jawline, strong masseter muscle, and if you have asymmetrical face looking to make your face more symmetrical. No matter what face shape you have, this treatment can help to enhance your face shape depending on your needs.

Apart from the purpose of aesthetic, Botulinum Injection to your masseter also help to minimize jaw clenching and teeth grinding.

Read on to find out the different concerns for 1. Abdominal fat and cellulite 2. Loose skin 3. Stretch marks

If your main concern is

1. Abdominal fat and cellulite

Vanquish and Exilis are treatments that utilise radiofrequency waves heat up and destroy fat cells, and the fat is subsequently expelled from the body via the lymphatic system. It also stimulates collagen regeneration and remodelling, resulting in firmer, tighter skin, and improves the appearance of cellulite. This is especially desirable in women post-pregnancy, who often complain of loose abdominal skin. Vanquish is a non contact device for overall bulk treatment of abdomen, love handles, and thighs, while Exilis aids in targeting specific trouble areas for body contouring. The two treatments can be done shortly after delivery, and can be combined for enhanced results.

Cryolipolysis is a fat freezing technology to reduce fat cell volume and cause cell death. It is useful to target areas with pockets of fat, such as love handles, butt, and thighs. We generally recommend newly postpartum mums to wait a few months, as the abdominal tissues are too lax immediately after birth to provide significant results. Skin tightening treatments can be added on to address the skin laxity.

Results are gradual, and a treatment course over a few months are recommended, as it takes time for fat cells to break down, and fat to be expelled. These treatments are also not a substitute for a healthy diet and regular exercise.

2. Loose skin

Radiofrequency treatments Vanquish and Exilis have a good track record for tightening of loose skin.

Other treatment modalities include:

3. Stretch marks

Stretch marks are a result of hormonal changes coupled with the dermal tissue of the skin being stretched rapidly during the period of fetal growth and weight gain in pregnancy. Although stretch marks cannot be totally erased, there are treatments to improve their appearance.

Infini is a device that delivers radiofrequency energy via microneedles to break down fibrous tissue and stimulates collagen remodelling. Lasers and broadband light (BBL) also have good results to reduce the pigmented appearance of early stretch marks.

What are the differences between Ultherapy & Thermage?

Thermage uses radiofrequency waves to heat the dermis. The handpiece is applied systematically in a grid to the targeted area. The entire procedure takes 30 to 90 minutes, depending on the size of the area treated.

Ultherapy uses high intensity focused ultrasound waves that reach the dermis as well as the deeper connective tissue layer beneath, called the SMAS (superficial muscular aponeurotic system). Tissue layers are visualised real-time using ultrasound imaging, ensuring that the energy waves are delivered precisely to the target tissues. The treatment takes about an hour.

Thermage can be done on the eyelids, face, decolletage. It it is also useful for crepey skin on the abdomen and thighs.

Ultherapy is suitable for the brow, jawline, neck, and decolletage.

There is virtually no downtime with both Thermage and Ultherapy, although one should expect a level of discomfort during the procedure. Some people may experience slight redness, swelling, soreness, or tingling sensation of the area treated. These are mild, and most are able to resume their usual activities immediately after the treatment.

Generally, only a single treatment is required. Although some people see immediate improvement, the full results are only seen in about 3 to 6 months as new collagen rebuilds, and the effect lasts for at least a year. However, our skin continues to age, so future touch up or maintenance sessions may be desired.

Who is this treatment suitable for?

Thermage and Ultherapy have been called “non surgical face lifts”, however the effects will not be as dramatic as a surgery. It is recommended for patients with mild to moderate wrinkles or loose skin. It is also a good option for those who do not wish to undergo surgery, and are happy with improvement on a smaller scale.

Thermage and Ultherapy are good options to obtain a more rejuvenated appearance: a reduction in fine lines and wrinkles, brighter eyes, tighter skin around the chin and neck, and a more contoured jawline. They can be combined with other treatments to target all areas of skin ageing. Schedule an appointment for a personalised consultation with our doctors.

Fractional co2 Laser

It works by ablating or burning away certain parts of the skin while leaving other parts of the skin untouched.

The ablated skin will be stimulated to grow new skin . Other areas of skin is spared to reduce the downtime of the treatment and allow faster healing of the skin .

Overall results is smoother, younger skin with improvement of the acne scars.

Because of the ablation and damage to the surface of the skin, there will be swelling and redness of the skin after the treatment. Scabs may also be seen on the skin over the next few days.

Sunblock and sun avoidance is essential to prevent skin pigmentation after treatment . Proper skin care is needed post treatment to prevent post treatment infection . Moisturizers are also recommended as the skin will be slightly dehydrated after the treatment.

Infini Microneedle Radio Frequency (RF)

The infini microneedle will pierce through the surface of the skin and release RF energy below the skin surface.

As the needle is insulated , only the tip of the needle will release RF energy, thereby reducing damage to the skin surface.  The needle can also be adjusted to reach different depths of the skin, thereby treating acne scars which may be at different depth. It is also able to treat acne scars which are both superficial and deep.

The RF energy will stimulate collagen and reduce the acne scars below the skin surface without damaging the skin surface.

Infini sounds like a staple on your skin. Treatment is more uncomfortable compared to co2 laser as there are microneedles used.

There will be some needle marks or bruises post treatment. Scabs may be seen on the skin post treatment. However risk of post treatment pigmentation is much lower compared to co2 Laser.

Proper skincare is needed to prevent infections. The skin will need moisturizers post treatment. Acne outbreak may occur post treatment and prophylactic treatment may be needed.

How to Decide Between the Treatments?

1. Severity , type and depth of acne scars
Generally co2 lasers are better for superficial rolling acne scars and box scars .
For rolling scars and box scars which are deeper and of different depth , infini will give better results
Your doctor is the best person to decide on the ideal treatment after assessing your skin

2.  Tolerance
Some dislike needles and find the infini treatment painful. Rest assured that local anaesthetic cream and injections are used prior to treatment to reduce any discomfort. But with the better results from a single session of infini, the discomfort is definitely worth it!

3. Budget
Fractional co2 Laser is cheaper than infini. Costs usually determine the choice of treatment.

4. Expectations
Results from one session of infini is equivalent to several sessions of fractional co2 Laser.

It is best to discuss your expectations, budget and pain tolerance with your doctor before deciding on the appropriate treatment for yourself.
