Guide to protecting your loved ones during the flu season in Singapore

3月 23, 2023

In Singapore, the Northern Hemisphere flu season generally occurs between November and February. The Southern Hemisphere season is from May to July. Influenza, commonly known as the flu, is a viral infection that can cause fever, cough, sore throat, runny nose, body ache and fatigue. It can also lead to serious complications, especially for young children, elderly individuals, and people with a weakened immune system. Here’s a guide on how to protect your loved ones during the flu season.

  1. Get vaccinated in Singapore

Get vaccinated in Singapore

The Flu vaccine is the most effective way to prevent the flu. It is recommended that everyone over the age of six months get vaccinated every year, especially those who are at higher risk of complications from the flu. These include young children, elderly individuals, pregnant women and people with chronic medical conditions.

  1. Practice good hygiene

Wash your hands frequently with soap and water, especially before eating, after using the toilet, and after blowing your nose or coughing.  Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Avoid touching your face, especially your mouth, eyes and nose, as viruses can enter the body through these areas.

  1. Stay home and wear a surgical mask when you are sick

If you or your loved ones have flu-like symptoms, stay home and avoid close contact with others to prevent the spread of the virus.  Wear a surgical mask at home and when you go out to reduce the risk of transmission. Rest, hydrate yourself and take over-the-counter medications to relieve the symptoms.

  1. Seek medical attention if you are unwell or at higher risk of complications from the flu

There are antiviral medications available to treat the flu.  To be effective, these antivirals should be taken within the first 48 hours after the person gets sick. They help to reduce the severity of flu symptoms and speed up recovery by a few days.  Antibiotics do not work on viruses, hence they are ineffective against the flu. However, people may develop serious secondary bacterial infections in addition to their flu virus which then requires antibiotic treatment. Hence, it is important to have your symptoms assessed by a doctor especially if you are not recovering as expected.

  1. Keep your surroundings clean

The flu virus can survive on surfaces for up to 48 hours, so it’s important to keep your surroundings clean and disinfected, Use a disinfectant to frequently clean touched surfaces such as doorknobs, light switches, your mobile phones and countertops. Wash the bedding, towels and clothes in hot water to kill any germs that may be present.

  1. Boost your immune system

Eat a healthy diet rich in fruits, vegetables and whole grains, and stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water. Get enough sleep, exercise regularly, and manage stress to keep your immune system functioning optimally.
