Vaccination can be a very scary thing to the kids, as most of them are afraid of needles and the pain from injections. It will definitely take some time for many to adapt and accept. However, this is the best way to protect them against COVID-19, said Dr Janil Puthucheary, Senior Minister of State of the Ministry of Health of Singapore.
From 27 December 2021, 300,000 children between the age of 5 to 11 are allowed to go for the COVID-19 vaccination, starting with the older ones. This is open to all Singapore citizens, PR and long-term pass holders. Parents can now register for their children through the national appointment system – https://child.vaccine.gov.sg/ and they will receive a unique link via SMS on their registered phone number within 3 to 5 working days to book an appointment for the COVID-19 vaccination.
As parents, we have to be prepared to answer the questions that our kids have, as well as to ease them through the process – before, during and after the vaccination. Common questions would be “Is it painful?”, “Would it hurt?” and this is when parents have to be strategic in replying them such as “you are only going to feel a pinch or a poke” – in a child-friendly language. Also, try to avoid words like ‘pain’ or ‘it is just a shot’.
Before heading to the vaccination centre, ensure that they have their meals and are well-hydrated to avoid dizziness or fainting. Giving them a small treat after the jab would make them feel better overall too. Not to worry, they may continue with their daily routine after the jab, but try to stay away from strenuous or physical exercises, as they should have more rest. Do monitor for the side effects during and after the vaccination such as allergy reactions or other symptoms like fever or aches.
Here are a list of suggested items that the parents can bring to the vaccination centre to prepare their kids for the vaccination.
1) Ice packs or a chilled water bottle to numb the injection site.
2) Books to read or phone with videos to distract the kids during the jab or waiting time.
3) Child’s favourite soft toy or item to accompany them.
Parents are also strongly advised to share with them how the entire procedure would be, alongside with their personal experience so that they know what to expect and will be less fearful or anxious.
