What is a pneumococcal infection?

Pneumococcal infections are caused by the bacteria Streptococcus pneumoniae. It can cause infection in the lungs (pneumonia), ear (otitis media), brain (meningitis) and blood (bacteremia). These infections are an important cause of morbidly and mortality in adults, especially among older adults.

肺炎球菌感染由肺炎链球菌引起。它会导致肺部（肺炎）、耳朵（中耳炎）、大脑（脑膜炎）和血液（菌血症）感染。其感染也是成人尤其是老年人发病和死亡的重要原因。

Who can take pneumococcal vaccine (Conjugate/Polysaccharide)?

Under the National Adult Immunisation Schedule (NAIS), all persons aged 65 years and above are recommended to get the pneumococcal vaccines. In addition, individual < 65 years old who are at risk for pneumococcal infection or severe complications from pneumococcal infection are also recommended to get the vaccinations.   根据国家成人免疫计划 (NAIS)，建议所有 65 岁及以上的人接种肺炎球菌疫苗。此外，还建议年龄<65岁、有肺炎球菌感染风险或肺炎球菌感染严重并发症的人士接种疫苗。                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                             What are the different types of pneumococcal vaccines and its costs?  

There are 2 types of vaccines available:

• Pneumococcal Conjugate Vaccine (PCV13): $195 (before GST)
• Pneumococcal Polysaccharide Vaccine (PPSV23): $75 (before GST)

PCV13 vaccine protects against 13 pneumococcal bacteria strains that most commonly cause pneumococcal disease, while the PPSV23 protects against 23 strains. PCV13 when given before PPSV23, provides extended protection in a selected group of patients, as compared to giving PPSV23 alone.

• 肺炎球菌结合疫苗 (PCV13): $195 (before GST)
• 肺炎球菌多糖疫苗 (PPSV23): $75 (before GST)

肺炎球菌结合疫苗，可预防 13 种最常引起肺炎球菌疾病的肺炎球菌菌株，而肺炎球菌多糖疫苗 可预防 23 种菌株。与单独接种肺炎球菌多糖疫苗相比，在 PPSV23 之前接种PCV13 可在一些患者中提供更广泛的保护。
