Breast cancer screening (women 40 years and above)
Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women in Singapore, with more than half occurring between the ages of 45 and 64 years. Screening allows for detection of early disease before any symptoms arise. Small tumours are more likely to be early stage, have more successful treatment options and better prognosis.
Screening by mammogram is recommended annually from age 40, and every 2 years from age 50. If you have relatives with breast or ovarian cancer, you may require earlier screening.
Cervical cancer screening (women 25 years and above)
Cancer of the cervix (the opening of the womb) is one of the most preventable cancers today. Most cervical cancers are caused by certain strains of the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV), which is transmitted through sexual contact.
HPV vaccines protect against HPV-16 and 18, the strains that cause most cervical cancers. The vaccine is advised for women between 9 and 26 years old, ideally before any sexual contact, and can be claimed using Medisave.
Traditionally, Pap tests, looking at a sample of cells from the cervix, are recommended for cervical cancer screening every 3 years for all women who have had sexual intercourse, starting from age 25. Women who have had the HPV vaccine are still recommended to undergo screening.
There is now a new HPV screening test, which tests for the presence of HPV, and is more effective at picking up pre-cancerous changes compared to the Pap test alone (COMPASS trial). The HPV DNA test is carried out the same way as the traditional Pap test, and only needs to be done every 5 years.
Osteoporosis
Osteoporosis, which means “porous bone”, is a condition of weakened bones and increased risk of fractures. Osteoporosis is common in Asian women especially after menopause, and is usually only detected after a fall or fracture. This risk can be reduced or avoided by undergoing screening for osteoporosis, and by starting medication early.
Your doctor will estimate your risk of osteoporosis, taking into account your medical history and risk factors. A Bone Mineral Density (BMD) scan may then be recommended to confirm the diagnosis.
