My child contracted COVID-19 from her childcare. I have heard about MIS-C. What is it?

5月 6, 2022

MIS-C or Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in Children is an uncommon complication of COVID-19, occurring in < 1% of children with confirmed COVID-19 infection.

  1. How common is it?

Studies have shown that the rates of MIS-C seem to vary by race and ethnicity, with Asian children accounting for a smaller number of cases.

  1. Should I be worried about it?

Firstly, COVID-19 in children is usually mild. However, rare and severe cases with multi system involvement have been reported. It is a potentially serious illness in children that appears to be a delayed, post-infectious complication of COVID-19 infection. MIS-C may present weeks after a child is infected with COVID-19.

  1. What are the symptoms I should look out for?

There are many symptoms of MIS-C. These may include common symptoms which can be mistaken for other conditions such as:

  1. A persistent fever
  2. Fatigue
  3. Diarrhoea
  4. Vomiting

  1. What is the worst that can happen?

As the name goes, this is a condition that can potentially affect multiple organs. These organs can include the heart, digestive tract, kidney, nervous system and the skin.

For example, if your child’s heart is involved, serious complications of this condition can include:

  1. inflammation of the heart muscles
  2. heart dysfunction
  3. permanent heart damage

  1. Is this treatable?

Yes, MIS-C is a treatable condition. With prompt attention, medicines can control the inflammation and help avoid lasting organ damage, especially involving the heart. Special medications can be given to control the inflammation. In the event of complications, measures can be taken to support the organs affected such as medical support for the heart and lungs.

  1. What should I do if I suspect my child having this condition?

Do not delay seeking medical advice if you suspect this condition. Timely treatment can be potentially life saving hence it is important to be vigilant and to be aware of such potential complications. Want to see a doctor? You may book an appointment with us.
