Psoriasis often first appears as a red scaly rash with a silvery tinge, and is sometimes mistaken for eczema. It is commonly called as 牛皮癣 in Mandarin.
It typically occurs on the scalp, elbows, and knees, but can occur on any part of the body. It may cause an itchy, flaky scalp similar to dandruff. In more severe forms, psoriasis can also affect the nails and joints.
Psoriasis can start at any age, and tends to wax and wane throughout life.
There is a genetic component involved in this autoimmune disorder, as people are more likely to develop psoriasis if they have a family member who has psoriasis. Skin cells are stimulated to multiply faster than normal, resulting in thick scaly patches that can be peeled off.
Although there is often no obvious cause, psoriasis can be aggravated by skin injuries such as abrasions or cuts, physical or emotional stress, sun exposure, smoking, alcohol, and certain medications.
Certain health conditions such as joint inflammation (inflammatory arthritis) and inflammatory bowel disease are more common in people with psoriasis, and patients will need to be monitored for these.
Psoriasis tends to persist lifelong, but there are effective treatments to reduce symptoms and severity of the disease.
The specific treatment – topical creams and lotions, oral medication, or phototherapy – depends on the extent of psoriasis.
