“Tech neck” wrinkles and what can be done to treat them

Most of us pay attention to our face, but the wrinkles on our neck are also tell-tale signs of ageing. Furthermore, looking down at your phone while constantly scrolling Facebook, Instagram or Tiktok may deepen existing horizontal lines on your neck – termed as “tech neck”.

Apart from checking our posture and reducing use of our mobile phones, what can we do to “un-do” tech neck wrinkles?

Prevention

• Apply your skincare all the way down to your neck and decolletage. Sunscreen prevents UV damage to our skin, which results in wrinkles. Moisturisers are important to hydrate dry skin – well-hydrated skin is plumped and fine lines are less visible.

• Use serums or creams containing anti-aging ingredients such as vitamin C to reverse free radical damage, and retinol to stimulate collagen and reduce wrinkles.

Treatment

• Lasers – such as Revlite, CO2, and Fotona – smooth the texture of skin on the neck and stimulate collagen production. They are also good preventive treatments in terms of preventing neck wrinkles from getting deeper.

• Skin tightening treatments such as Ultherapy, Protege Elite, and BBL+STAR are best for those with concerns about saggy skin on the neck. Energy from high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU), radiofrequency, and broadband light is delivered to deeper levels of the skin, increasing collagen production and remodelling. The improvements in skin elasticity, firmness, and lifting continue for several months after the treatment.

• Profhilo, an injectable hyaluronic acid product, can also be used for the neck and decolletage area. It has been shown to effectively stimulate stem cells in the skin and remodel skin – increasing collagen and elastin by 12 times, skin hydration by 20%, while lasting 8 times longer than non-cross linked hyaluronic acid! Skin on the neck is tightened and lifted, and wrinkles that developed as a result of collagen loss are reduced.
