During pregnancy, some women are fortunate to have a “pregnancy glow”.
For others, hormonal changes in pregnancy may wreak havoc on the skin, causing acne outbreaks, melasma and other pigmentation changes, or just dull-looking skin.
We often get asked the questions below:
What are the suitable aesthetic treatments during pregnancy? Read on to find out more!
Aesthetic Treatment Not Recommended for Pregnant Woman: Laser, HIFU, Botox, Fillers, Oral Medications etc.
Generally, it is not recommended to receive laser treatments or other energy-based treatments such as HIFU or radiofrequency skin tightening during pregnancy.
This is due to the lack of information regarding their effects on the foetus. Similarly, Botox and fillers are to be avoided as well for the same reason.
Oral acne medication such as antibiotics and isotretinoin (Accutane) are an absolute no-no during pregnancy, as they can pass through the bloodstream to the developing baby and cause fetal malformations. Creams and lotions containing retinol or any of its derivatives are also to be avoided.
Aesthetic Treatment Suitable for Pregnant Woman: Topical Skincare & Medical Facials
Medical facials are recommended – it helps to cleanse, soothe, and hydrate your sensitive skin due to hormonal change. A good pampering facial session can help a pregnant lady to de-stress too!
Most other topical skincare is also safe in pregnancy. If you are in doubt, do speak to our doctors for clarification.
If you already had procedures done shortly before you found out you were pregnant, do not fret!
They are unlikely to cause any fetal abnormalities as the injected substance or laser energy are largely limited to the skin and muscle layer.
However, as there is limited information regarding their safety in pregnancy, it is still advisable not to undergo any treatments or injections while pregnant.
A healthy diet and a consistent skincare regimen go a long way to keep your skin in optimum condition during pregnancy. After the baby is born, you can then safely resume aesthetic treatments for face and body.
