6 FAQ on Laser Pigmentation Removal – answered by Dr Soh Lea Sar.
1. Which laser shall I use to get rid of my pigmentation?
The selection of the appropriate laser depends on the character of their pigmentation, their skin type and their response to the treatment.
All lasers and light treatment have different wavelength and different focus of treatment.
The skin type also determines which laser is suitable for the individual skin, with the settings customized to the person being treated. Different individuals will also respond differently to the same treatment.
Let the doctor decide for you
Doctors have medical training and experience to know which laser is suitable for their patients. They should let their doctor assess and decide for them the treatment that is appropriate for their skin condition.
2. Do I have more than one types of pigmentation on my face?
Most of us do not have only one type of pigmentation.
We can possess different types of pigmentation at different depth of the skin. Examples are melasma, freckles and lentigines. These will need different lasers to treat them effectively.
Example
The photo below shows different levels of pigmentation. This will need several treatment sessions using different types of lasers to remove the pigmentation.
3. What are the types of lasers?
There are 2 main types of lasers. They are ablative lasers and non-ablative lasers.
There are also pigment lasers and vascular lasers which manages different types of pigmentation.
4. What are the differences between ablative and non-ablative lasers?
Ablative lasers will remove a superficial layer of the skin. For example, CO2 laser.
Whereas non-ablative lasers will treat the skin without damaging the skin surface e.g. Yellow Laser.
As such, ablative lasers will have more downtime than non-ablative lasers.
5. Are lasers painful?
For all laser treatments, a topical anaesthetic cream is applied on the area to be treated before the treatment to minimise discomfort.
Slight stinging or warm sensation may still be felt however, the treatment is very well tolerated most of the time.
6. Can I combine different laser treatments in one session?
Yes, it is possible and in fact, we often use a combination of lasers to ensure optimized and progressive improvement in our clinics.
