Dermal Fillers: What Should You Know About It?

3 1 月, 2020

The older we get, the more our faces lose volume due to the reduction of collagen, fats, and elasticity. You can’t stop time, but you can at least combat the signs of ageing and plump up the face with the help of dermal fillers.

Dermal fillers are gel-like substances based on hyaluronic acid (HA) used for restoring volume in the skin and shaping facial features. Most certified clinics utilise FDA-approved fillers for face contouring and rejuvenation treatments in Singapore that focuses on contouring, thus giving patients a slimmer appearance as a result.

How Do Dermal Fillers Work?

Dermal fillers are used to increase volume in the cheeks, chin, lips, and other areas. How do they work exactly?

The most common compound used in dermal fillers is hyaluronic acid (HA), a natural substance found in our skin. HA plays a vital role in our body, as it keeps the skin hydrated by retaining water to keep tissues lubricated. HA can also speed wound healing and relieve joint pain.

Take note that the effects of dermal fillers usually last about six months or so. Once your body fully absorbs the compounds, the treated area would not look as volumised as it was right after the procedure. This is when you can choose to undergo another session of dermal fillers to achieve a plump and hydrated skin once more.

With dermal fillers, you can restore lost collagen and elasticity to create a youthful appearance. You can get dermal fillers injected into most areas of your face such as the cheeks, lips, chin, and forehead.

Possible Side Effects

While it’s safe to get injected with FDA-approved dermal fillers, there’s a slight chance of experiencing minor to significant side effects, including:

  • Discomfort
  • Swelling and bruising
  • Infections
  • Lumps

Since dermal fillers treatments can be expensive, some people look towards black market fillers instead. Avoid this at all costs, and only undergo filler treatments at certified clinics that use FDA-approved drugs and medicine.

In Singapore, the average price of dermal fillers range from $500 to $1000. If you’re paying for a lot less, then be careful as they could be black market dermal fillers. With inappropriate treatment procedure and product used, you could experience the following serious side effects:

  • Scarring
  • Blurred vision, partial vision loss, or total blindness
  • Allergic reactions

Preparations for the Procedure

If you’re considering getting injected with dermal fillers, you will need to prepare for the procedure beforehand.

As with B.tox, you should avoid taking aspirin, ibuprofen, and other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs two weeks before the treatment. Also, avoid using topical products and applying any cream on your face. You should also avoid drinking alcohol altogether.

During the day of the treatment, visit the clinic without putting on makeup, and keep your face clean.

Keep in mind that if you want to minimise unwanted results, you must first test the possible outcomes by getting injected with temporary fillers. The results of temporary fillers will allow the dermatologist to decide whether or not the patient is qualified to undergo permanent fillers.

Post-Treatment Expectations

As with the preparations prior to treatment, you should also avoid drinking alcohol and taking nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs after the procedure. Drinking alcohol after the treatment can increase the risk of bruising.

While bruises are sometimes inevitable, avoiding alcohol should lessen the pain and cause the swelling go away in a shorter amount of time.

One should also avoid engaging in strenuous exercise for 24 hours. If the swelling worsens, try to sleep with your face upwards so you can relieve the discomfort. Tylenol is an option if the pain worsens.

If you do experience fever, chills, discoloured areas, or severe pain, contact your doctor immediately. This could lead to a more dangerous problem if left unchecked, so consult a dermatologist to get treated as soon as possible.
