Common causes of painful feet: Flat Foot and Bunions

12月 20, 2019

HS Clinic 3 4

Our feet support the weight of our body and absorb the force of the hard pavements as we walk. What are some common causes of painful feet, and what can be done to prevent it?

Flat feet

  1. Flat feet

The internal arches of the feet are normally raised off the ground when we are standing. Flat feet (or pes planus) happens in some people, where the arches of the feet are low or flat.

For flat-footed people who experience pain after walking or exercising, a visit to the podiatrist is recommended. Podiatrists will assess your foot arches and movement and recommend orthotics such as insoles and proper fitting shoes for better foot support, and more even distribution of body weight. Physiotherapy may be helpful to improve running gait and posture to reduce the risk of overuse injuries.

Bunions

  1. Bunions

Bunions (or hallux valgus) are bony bumps at the base of the big toe and are often painful. Pressure on the big toe joint causes the big toe to angle towards the second toe. They usually get worse with time, and in severe cases, the big toe may overlap over or under the second toe.

Tight, pointed, and narrow shoes that squeeze the toes together make bunions more likely to develop and worsen. High heels put more pressure on the big toe joint and forefoot and are also best avoided. Instead, go for wider shoes with adequate room for toes. Changing to proper footwear is often enough to prevent bunion pain for the majority of cases.

Bunion splints and shields are also available to reduce bunion pain. Bunion splints hold the big toe in a straighter position and are meant to be worn at night or when barefoot. Bunion shields come with padding to reduce pain caused by friction of the shoe against the bunion. Placing an ice pack for 20 minutes over the bunion can also reduce pain and swelling.

If the pain from bunions does not improve despite trying the measures listed above, surgery is an option to realign the big toe.
