[:en]In the last 2 weeks, both Pfizer and Moderna announced that their vaccines are respectively 90% and 94.5% effective, and both appear to be safe. Common side effects reported include pain at the injection site, fatigue and aching muscles and joints. Approval from the US Food and Drug Administration for emergency use could come as early as mid-December. Hence, we are close to a workable vaccine.
However, is a vaccine the magic bullet to ending this pandemic? According to the head of the World Health Organization Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, “A vaccine will complement the other tools we have, not replace them.”. It will take some time for a vaccine to be available widely and in the meantime, the virus can continue to spread and cause havoc to human life.
Even though modern-day science is on the verge of delivering an effective vaccine in record time, we cannot let down our guard. Social distancing and wearing of masks need to continue till a significant percentage of our population is vaccinated. See a doctor if you are feeling unwell and practise good personal hygiene, which includes washing your hands regularly with soap and water. Let’s not be complacent, but stay protected as always.
