Rosacea is no doubt a cause of persistent facial redness. However, there are other more common causes including acne, eczema and allergic dermatitis. Each condition has its own characteristics, and it is beyond the scope of this article to explain each condition. In a nutshell, if you notice that you have persistent facial redness that seems to worsen with exposure to sunlight, heat, stress, alcohol, spicy food and yes, even mask wearing, you may have rosacea. Although rosacea is unfortunately a condition that cannot be cured per se, it can certainly be controlled.
Treatment of rosacea usually requires a multi-modal approach. Judicious use of broad-spectrum sunblock of at least SPF 50 and above, avoidance of triggers, medications and medical grade lasers or light therapies are all important management steps.
Soolantra (topical ivermectin) cream, has been used since 2014 for the treatment of rosacea. In large scale clinical studies, patients have seen a reduction of the bumps and blemishes of rosacea in just two weeks. Medical grade lasers and light therapies such as Yellow Laser, BroadBand light or long pulse laser have all been used to some degree of success in the management of rosacea. There is no one-size-fits-all management approach for rosacea. Everyone’s rosacea is different, and modalities used are tailored to the individual.
