A growing population of individuals who have had an acute COVID-19 infection experience a wide range of persistent symptoms. Such patients may experience symptoms for longer than 4 week and cannot explain their symptoms by a different diagnosis. This has been termed as Long Covid and as COVID-19 continues to pervade our everyday life, with potential variants and mutations; indeed, this can be a worrying syndrome to acquire.
This can consist of different symptoms ranging from persistent physical and psychological problems. Such physical symptoms include difficulty breathing, tiredness, chest pain, a loss of a sense of smell, muscle aches, diarrhoea and headaches. Indeed, it can seem like such a discombobulated constellation of symptoms with even psychological or cognitive complaints thrown into the mix with symptoms such as anxiety, low mood, poor memory and concentration.
The first step for yourself if you are experiencing such symptoms would be to assist your doctor in terms of narrowing down particular organs that can be involved. This can include doing chest x rays, electrocardiograms or even more specialised tests on specific organ systems to determine if there indeed is any detectable physical injury that can be addressed. The frustrating thing for many people with this condition is that despite battery after battery of such tests, no physical cause is found. Much is not known about this condition where many new studies are being done to decipher the mysteries of this condition.
However, there can be measures taken to address such symptoms. For example, if there is intense fatigue, the doctor may be able to assess if there is any underlying condition which can affect your symptom and see if rehabilitation regimes can be prescribed to help you regain your full strength. Certain conditions termed as comorbid conditions exist more commonly in conjunction with the recovery from COVID-19. For example, there are studies that show that there can be more anxiety symptoms post COVID-19 infection which can be treated with anti-anxiety medications which have both physical and psychological symptoms.
