Boost Your Immune System with These Foods

July 9, 2020

Boost your immune system and stay healthy during this pandemic.

Our immune system is key to fighting off and recovering from viruses and pathogens.

FAQ: Are there foods that can improve our immunity?

The answer is YES. Certain foods may strengthen our immune system and keep us healthy.

5 Types of Foods That Can Boost Our Immunity

  1. Fruit – Aim for a variety of brightly coloured fruit such as blueberries, strawberries, oranges. These brightly coloured fruits contain vitamin C, flavonoids and antioxidants, can reduce the incidence of respiratory tract infections.
  2. Vegetables contain a myriad of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants which help to support our immune system. In particular, cruciferous vegetables – broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, kailan, kale – contain sulforaphane, a compound which is increasingly researched for its immune-boosting properties, as well as its role in reducing chronic inflammation and supporting heart health.
  3. Fish such as mackerel, sardines, salmon are one of the best sources of omega-3, which are protective against inflammation and infection. Aim for a serving of fish once or twice a week. For vegetarians, alternative sources of omega-3 are flaxseed and chia seed.
  4. Fermented foods like yoghurt, kimchi, miso, and cheese, are full of good probiotic bacteria. These healthy bacteria normally live in our intestines and communicate with our gut cells, helping our immune system to protect us from invading pathogens.
  5. Turmeric, ginger, and garlic are full of flavonoids and anti-inflammatory compounds. You can also consume turmeric and ginger teas with honey.

Other Ways to Boost Our Immunity

Adjust your lifestyle a little and improve your immunity:

  • Avoid smoking
  • Exercise regularly
  • Get enough sleep
  • Minimise stress
  • Wash your hands frequently

Our immune system is made up of a complex of different cells, cytokines, and mechanisms. Eating a varied and balanced diet, together with other lifestyle factors, will help to support our immunity.

If you are getting frequent viral infections or are concerned about your immune function, feel free to speak to one of our doctors for a further assessment.
