Lifestyle tips to avoid dementia

June 1, 2022

The Well-Being of the Singapore Elderly (WiSE) conducted in 2013 showed 10 percent of dementia patients are those aged 60 years and above. Alzheimer disease (AD) is the commonest form of dementia, followed by vascular dementia and there is no cure for dementia. However, there are certain things that we can do to mitigate the risk of getting dementia.

Lifestyle modifications include eating healthily, not smoking and increasing physical activity have shown to reduce risk of dementia. Regular physical activity is a key factor for brain health. Being overweight or obese has proven increase risk of hypertension and diabetes mellitus, which are linked to higher risk of dementia. Hence maintaining a healthy weight, good control of blood sugar, blood pressure and cholesterol level are essential.

Excessive alcohol intake also increases risk of stroke, heart disease and detrimental to central nervous system. Hence, we should limit ourselves to no more than 2 standard drinks a day for men, and no more than 1 standard drink a day for women. 1 standard drink equal to one can (330ml) of regular beer, half a glass (175ml) of wine and one shot (35ml) of hard liquor.
Stay mentally alert by learning new hobbies, reading or solving crossword puzzles and socially active can lower risk of getting dementia. These activities stimulate brain and make us happier and can help to keep us away from dementia.
